Australia's world-title winning team will contest the first Olympic gold medal in women's rugby after winning through to the Rio Games sevens final with a 17-5 semi-final victory over Canada.

The top-seeded Australians bounced back from a below-par day two to produce a dominant display in the semi-final at Deodoro Stadium which never gave the Canadians a sniff.

Backline linchpin Emilee Cherry scored two tries in the first half, including one after the siren, for the world series champions to take a 12-0 lead at the break.

Chloe Dalton then started and finished a length-of-the-field play midway through the second half to assure a place in the gold final match later on Monday.
